For those using a Wilfa humidifier who want to understand how humidity works, how to use the product, and how to achieve the best possible results.

Why should I use a humidifier?

A humidifier helps create a more comfortable indoor humidity level, especially during the winter months.

When cold outdoor air enters through ventilation and is heated to room temperature, the relative humidity drops sharply. The air can then feel dry even though the temperature is comfortable.

A balanced humidity level can help with:

  • Less dry skin.

  • Less dry lips.

  • More comfortable airways.

  • A more pleasant sleeping environment.

  • Better conditions for potted plants.

  • Reduced risk of wooden furniture and parquet flooring drying out.


Is it normal for water to remain in the humidifier when the tank is empty?

It is completely normal for water to remain in the base unit or drip tray when the water tank is empty.

On the underside of the water tank there is a valve that releases water down into the base unit. It is in the lower part of the humidifier that the mist is produced.

Therefore, it is normal that:

  • Water remains in the base unit.

  • A small amount of water is visible even when the tank is empty.

  • Water remains until it is used in mist production.

This applies to all ultrasonic humidifiers and is part of the product's normal operation.


How much noise does a humidifier make?

Wilfa's ultrasonic humidifiers operate quietly, typically around 35 dB.

35 dB is roughly equivalent to the sound level in a quiet bedroom or a quiet library. For most users, this means the humidifier can be used at night without being perceived as disruptive.

Many of our models also offer:

  • Night mode.

  • Dimmable display.

  • Option to turn off the display completely.

If you are sensitive to light, we recommend using night mode if your model has this feature.


Why am I not achieving the desired humidity level?

If the desired humidity level is not achieved, this can be due to several different factors.

The humidifier's built-in hygrometer, i.e. the sensor that measures humidity, is usually located in or near the unit itself. The reading may therefore differ from the humidity level in the rest of the room.

To measure humidity more accurately, we recommend that you:

  1. Use an external hygrometer.

  2. Place the hygrometer approximately 3–5 meters from the humidifier.

  3. Measure the humidity over several days.

It is important to know that:

  • Walls, furniture, textiles and plants absorb moisture.

  • It can take 5–10 days before the humidity stabilizes in a room.

  • Ventilation can carry moisture away and affect the result.


What is relative humidity?

Relative humidity is the most common way of measuring humidity.

Relative humidity is expressed as a percentage (% RH) and shows how much water vapor the air contains in relation to the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold at a given temperature.

Since the air's capacity to hold water vapor varies with temperature, the same amount of water in the air can produce different relative humidity levels depending on whether the air is warm or cold.


What is absolute humidity?

Absolute humidity describes the actual amount of water vapor in the air.

The measurement is usually expressed as grams of water per cubic meter of air (g/m³).

Unlike relative humidity, absolute humidity is not directly affected by the air temperature.


Why is humidity important?

Humidity affects people, plants, furniture and buildings alike.

A well-balanced humidity level can contribute to:

  • Increased indoor comfort.

  • Less drying out of skin and mucous membranes.

  • Better conditions for wooden furniture and parquet flooring.

  • A more stable indoor climate.

Humidity also affects how warm or cold the air feels.


What is the correct indoor humidity level?

During the winter months, a relative humidity of approximately 40–45% is generally recommended. This level usually provides a good balance between comfort and a healthy indoor climate.

It is important to know that:

  • Plants and people often thrive at a humidity level above 40%.

  • Very high humidity over extended periods can create favorable conditions for mold.

  • In a normally ventilated home, it is difficult for a humidifier to raise the humidity to harmful levels.


What types of humidifiers are there?

There are mainly three different types of humidifiers.

Ultrasonic humidifier

An ultrasonic humidifier uses vibrations to create a fine, visible mist of water.

Advantages:

  • Low energy consumption.

  • Quiet operation.

  • High capacity.

Vaporizer

A vaporizer heats water and produces warm steam.

Advantages:

  • Hygienic steam production.

  • No visible mist.

Evaporator

An evaporator uses a filter where water evaporates naturally with the help of airflow.

Advantages:

  • Self-regulating humidification.

  • No visible mist.

Wilfa's humidifiers mainly use ultrasonic technology.


What is an ultrasonic humidifier?

An ultrasonic humidifier uses a small vibrating plate that vibrates at a very high frequency.

The vibrations convert water into very small water droplets that disperse as a visible mist in the room.

Advantages of ultrasonic technology:

  • Quiet operation.

  • Low energy consumption.

  • Fast humidification.

  • Visible mist that makes it easy to see that the product is working.


My air purifier reacts to the mist from the humidifier, why?

If you use an air purifier and an ultrasonic humidifier in the same room, the air purifier may register the mist as particles.

The visible mist from an ultrasonic humidifier consists of very small water droplets. These are often registered by the particle sensor in the air purifier.

This does not mean that the humidifier is adding dust or contaminants to the air.

To reduce this effect, we recommend that you:

  • Place the units in different rooms.

  • Use the humidifier mainly during dry winter months.

  • Place the units at a good distance from each other.


When should I use the HEAT function?

The HEAT function can be used if you find the regular mist feels cool.

The function warms the mist slightly before it disperses into the room.

Advantages of the HEAT function:

  • The mist may feel more pleasant during cold winter days.

  • The distribution of moisture may be slightly improved.

The difference is usually not very large, but many users find the air feels a little more pleasant with the function activated.


How do I clean my humidifier?

Regular cleaning is important to avoid limescale, bacteria and buildup.

Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the humidifier and unplug it.

  2. Empty all water from the unit.

  3. Clean the base unit with clean water.

  4. Add vinegar or descaling agent for limescale deposits.

  5. Gently brush with, for example, a toothbrush if needed.

  6. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

  7. Dry all parts before use.

  8. Clean the water tank as needed.

For the best hygiene, we recommend that you:

  • Do not leave water sitting for several days.

  • Change the water regularly.

  • Empty and dry the base unit often.

  • Remove limescale deposits as soon as they appear.

Regular cleaning helps the humidifier maintain high performance and extends the product's lifespan.
